“It’s a long way to Tipperary, it’s a long way to go!” However, once you get there, you’ll never want to leave! The county is so full of great history, you could get lost there forever. One of Ireland’s most famous landmarks is located in Tipperary. The Rock of Cashel stands tall on top of a limestone hill overlooking the land. It was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster for several hundred years prior to the Norman invasion. In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church. Visitors to Tipperary also enjoy Cahir Castle. The castle was built in 1142 and is one of the largest castles in Ireland. It is located on the river Suir and is a great place to have a walk around and explore. The television series ‘The Tudors’ was shot here in Cahir Castle. Tipperary is also famous for it’s hurling! Hurling is an Irish sport and is actually the fastest field sport in the world! Tipperary always does very well in the GAA Hurling League so if you get a chance to catch a match, soak up every minute of it!
