Digging’ for Father’s Day Gifts? We’ve Got You Covered!

Seamus Heaney, one of the most renowned Irish poets of the twentieth century, often wrote about his Irish childhood and his Father. In “Digging,” Heaney writes about his hardworking Father, digging deep into the Irish soil and handing his children the potatoes they had grown.

“The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft

Against the inside knee was levered firmly.

He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep

To scatter new potatoes that we picked,

Loving their cool hardness in our hands.

By God, the old man could handle a spade.

Just like his old man.”

In that second stanza, we learn that Heaney’s Father has learned his skill from his own Dad. Father’s day is all about celebrating the relationships between Fathers and children, no matter how old either one may be. We learn things from our Fathers at all stages of our lives, and we use these skills throughout our lives. Celebrate your diligent Dad the Irish way with the perfect gift from Biddy Murphy!
