Popular Surnames: Reilly, Carey, Daly, Murtagh, Nugent, Farrell, Duffy, Leavy

Westmeath is located in the very center of Ireland. The county is home to many historical sites including Belvedere House. The house was built in the 1700s and is steeped in rich history. Visitors today can tour the house and stunning gardens as well as other ruins located on the 160 acre site. Visitors to Westmeath often spend a lot of their time in Athlone. Located on the river Shannon, there are plenty of opportunities to sail, kayak or maybe stay on one of the many barges lining the riverbanks. The town is full of life - take a stroll through the streets, catch a hurling match in the pub or take in a spot of fishing. Mullingar is another big town in Westmeath. There, visitors can take in Christ the King Cathedral built in 1920 to replace the old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (1836-1936). The cathedral is so stunning and is well worth a look! Mullingar is also famous for its sports facilities. Have an interest in golf, horse-riding, greyhound races, snooker or boxing? You can find plenty of places to practice or take in a game around the town. Mullingar is also home to Mullingar Pewter. Mullingar Pewter crafts fine pewter and steel crafted pieces employing locals from the region. Take a look at their excellent collection here!
