Popular Surnames: Doherty, O’Donnell, MacIntyre, Sweeney, Boyle

Donegal is the most northern county in the Republic of Ireland. Located on the north west coast, Donegal boasts some of the most spectacular mountains, cliffs and beaches in the country. Donegal recently won ‘Coolest Place on the Planet’ by National Geographic who was stunned by its picturesque landscape, thrilling outdoor sports, surfing and of course, the beautiful Donegal accent (arguably the finest accent in the country but that’s just one woman’s humble opinion.) There is so much to see and do in Donegal. Glenveagh National Park is the second largest National Park in Ireland covering over 16,000 hectares. There are many trails for walkers, hikers and even cyclists to enjoy. Glenveagh also boasts the Glenveagh Castle which was built in 1867 and open to visitors. The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and you could easily get lost there for the day - maybe even two or three. Donegal is also home to Grianan of Aileach, a ringfort on top of Greenan Mountain. The stone ringfort is believed to have been built in the 6th or 7th Century and was the seat of the Kingdom of Aileach. Donegal is definitely somewhere to get lost in ancient Irish history & culture, as well as one of the few counties to get the occasional snow! Biddy Murphy carries products from companies that continue the tradition of hand weaving to create fine products from clothing to bedspreads to weather this rural region!
