St. Brigid's Cross Collection

DONE

St. Brigid is the second patron saint of Ireland, whose feast day is her birthday -- the first day of spring, 1st February (Lá Fhéile Bhride). Brigid is also known as Muire na nGael or "Mary of the Gael," which means Our Lady of the Irish.

She was a healer and a protector. When asked to comfort the sick, she would sit by their bedside and pass the time by creating crosses from the rushes that lined the floor. Today, the design of her original cross can be seen in various interpretations made of reeds, crafted into pendants and adorning the walls on plaques.

St. Brigid reed crosses are traditionally placed above the doorway in a home or building to protect those who enter. They are replaced annually on February 1st.
