County Louth is located just north of Dublin on the east coast of Ireland. The county is full of ancient Irish history. One of Louth’s most popular tourist destinations is Mellifont Abbey. The abbey was founded in 1142 and stands on the banks of the river Mattock. It’s really amazing to walk around the ruins of the abbey and read all about it’s history. Visitors also enjoy seeing King John’s Castle located in Carlingford, Louth. It is located on the town’s harbor and dates back to the 12th century. It’s quite a large structure with walls that are 11ft thick accompanied by slits for arrows. When you’re finished taking in all of the history, you can head into Dundalk for some Irish music, food and dancing! There’s just so much to do and see, you’ll be spoiled for choice! Louth is also home to Brannigan Weavers, a father and son team that produce authentic woolen products such as Irish tweed capes with a contemporary feel. Biddy Murphy offers beautiful products from John and John Brannigan!
