Biddy Murphy Celtic Goods Post Paddy's Day

Paddy's Day Roundup:
Well it was quite the weekend wasn't it? Somebody said to me that it was becoming
like Groundhog Day by the Monday, but sure we had a great time.
Thanks to Christine Gribble for her photo exhibit, if you need wedding or family portraits
she has a beautiful portfolio, even if she was pictured with Lord Stanley's Cup.
John, Joan & Robin gave us some great traditional music while Tom Mooney brought
a tear to a few eyes with his rendition of Danny Boy. Saturday & Monday!!
I'm sure Tom won't mind me passing on this link sent to me of a rather less reverend version

The party went down well with the Class from Lake Michigan College all passing the test
with flying colors. We even had some political commentary on Ronald Reagan's trip to
Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary (thanks Sheelagh) and the person who managed to become
inextricably attached a size 10 Claddagh ring on his size 12 finger did bring it back next
day for a full refund. The wonders of Kerrygold butter!!

Sarah from the Erin Quinn School of Irish dance also was amazing with her soft shoe
and hard shoe exhibit of dancing. And she's dancing under 10. A great big  "bualadh
bos" (boola boss) round of applause for her and her family for traveling to South Haven.

Weekly On-line Specials:

La Fheile Naomh Phadraig Shona Daoibh (Happy St. Patrick's Day):
Law ay-le nave faw-rig dee-iv. I know, it sounds JUST like it looks!!
It's a bit ironic that the weekend after Wales beat Ireland to win the RBS Six Nations
Rugby Triple Crown that the Irish are celebrating another Welshman around the world.

Yes indeed folks, Paddy was from Wales. 'Tis a small consolation that Scotland beat England...
post Celtic Tiger and Good Friday agreement and all, I'm glad to say we've moved
beyond the triumphilistic nationalism!

Cead Mile Failte (Kay-ud Meel-uh Fawl-che) 100,000 welcomes from yet again another snowy Michigan. The ice and snow stretch out as far as one can see on the Lake this morning. It changes daily depending on the temperature and wind direction.

According to Irish Historical Mysteries, it may not be widely known outside Ireland that the Carmelite Church in Whitefriar Street in Dublin City claims to hold the remains of St Valentine. The Carmelites first arrived in Ireland in 1271, and today there is a community of 17 in the Monastery attached to Whitefriar Street Church. The story of how the remains of St Valentine came to rest in Whitefriar Street is interesting, and involves a famous nineteenth-century Carmelite attached to the Church, Fr John Spratt. Fr Spratt visited Rome in 1835, and apparently largely on the strength of his powers as a preacher, Pope Gregory XVI decided to make his Church a gift of St Valentine's body, then believed to be in the Cemetery of St Hippolitus in Rome. The remains of Valentine were duly transferred to Whitefriar Street Church in 1836, and since that date have been venerated there, especially around the time of the Saint's Feast Day.

Starting Monday Feb. 18th from 7-8:30pm I will be hosting a class that will cover language, culture, history and practical tips for those planning to do some traveling or genealogical research. Click the link above or call 1-800-252-1562 ext. 7500

Also this Sunday at Foundry Hall in South Haven at 7pm see Peter Mulvey. He was busking on Grafton St. some years ago after graduating from Marquette University.

Symbol Meaning:
Based on the ancient lyre, the Irish harp is one of the world's oldest instruments. The ancient Irish kings employed harpists to entertain them. At one sad point in Irish history conquering invaders made it illegal to possess an Irish harp, and set out to burn every Irish harp in a failed attempt to kill the "Irish spirit".

Greatly honored the harp is the national emblem of Ireland. It appeared prominently on all Irish coinage until the official currency of Ireland changed to the Euro. However, you will still find the harp stamped on Ireland's portion of the new Euro coin.

The Irish Harp has many distinguishing features such as a sounding box carved from a single block of willow wood, T-shaped fore-pillar, a heavy neck and thick brass strings. These combine to give the Harp a unique sound for which it has been famous since medieval times.

Harps from this historical past including the world famous Brian Boru harp are now housed in Trinity College and the National Museum in Dublin.

  • And finally a very sad story

From Thursday, courtesy of Patrick Logue of The Irish Times .

450 kegs fall onto back of thief's lorry

Dublin's famous Guinness brewery has been the victim of an audacious theft, gardaí said today.

450 kegs were taken in Dublin robbery

A man drove a truck into the brewery on Victoria Quay, Dublin 8, yesterday and hitched up a trailer containing 450 kegs of different beers.

He then left the premises and escaped through Dublin's city traffic.

The haul contained 180 kegs of Guinness, 180 kegs of Budweiser and 90 kegs of Carlsberg and has a total value of €64,000. In the pubs, the loot would represent approximately 40,500 pints and a whopping bar tab of approximately €160,000.

Officers in Kevin Street Garda Station are investigating but a Garda spokesman said there was no sign of the missing truck, trailer or its driver.

And the sad news is…€160,000 is about $235,000

Even sadder....a pint costs about $5.80

And the saddest part….Budweiser…..

Not many days left to get shipments in from Ireland for Christmas so if you need a ring or other special order get it in quickly.

We’re open from 10am to 6pm this Sunday so drop down for a chat and we’ll have the kettle on for complimentary tea and biscuits (cookies!)

Irish Phrase

I had a customer visiting from Colorado in during the week who told me her family home in South Haven was called Féirín Dé. Or “Gift from God”….she had it on her cell phone directory!!

The word Féirín derives from the Cork / Kerry region and refers to a small gift brought home from the fair. Irish puts “’ín” , pronounced “een” on the  end of a word to make it the diminutive form “Féir-ín”. Little Fair.

Another Céad Mile Fáilte to one and all. Conas ata tu...in Irish means how are you. Pronounced: Kun-ass ah-thaw too: easy eh? So there's your Irish phrase for the week.

We have received our shipment of Irish Food products for Christmas:
Plum puddings
Mince pies
Christmas crackers...what dinner party is complete without sharing a cracker with your dinner partner and wearing the funky paper hats???

We also received a shipment of Galway Crystal which includes some Christmas ornaments, bells and the very popular ring holders. They're on the website so check them out.

Galway Crystal >>

The Guinness rugby jerseys are also back in stock as well as a few bodhráns with tutorial book and DVD. That’s Bow-Rawn (what the doggie in the window does….bow wow)

We won First Place in the recent Scarecrow Competition for Businesses in South Haven. Yes indeed, McScarey (a distant cousin of Patrick Dempsey) was greatly admired by the judges...I think it's the fine dancer’s legs on him. Watch out Michael Flatley!!
